Top 5 Spots for Stunning Mountain Views
Our favorite picture-perfect places from the slopes of Purgatory.
Located in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado, Purgatory Resort offers picturesque mountain vistas from many places on its slopes. Revel in breathtaking backdrops before taking a run or during a quick ride break, and capture your memories from the slopes with an inspiring and serene background. Here are our top 5 spots (and a few honorable mentions) for incredible mountain landscapes.
The name says it all. Take a moment at the top of this run to look around, and you’ll understand what a winter paradise Purgatory truly is. A breath of fresh air enhances the unobstructed view of the Needles Mountain Range off in the distance, with the vast valley below extending towards the base of these giant peaks.
Top of the Legends Lift
The views from the top of this lift are just that: legendary! With all trails off of this lift named after Purgatory “legends,” you’re also bound to find some of the best expert level skiing and riding on the mountain. 360-degree views welcome you to the highest point of the ski area at 10,822 feet. Take a moment to catch your breath and admire the surrounding mountains, including the La Plata Mountains off in the distance to the southwest.
Named for Purgatory founder Ray Duncan, this trail is located off of Lift 8. A black run, expert skiers and snowboarders will enjoy a quick break on this technical trail to take in snow-capped peaks only visible from the backside of the ski area.
Located off of the Hermosa Park Express Lift (AKA Lift 3), this intermediate trail is best for cruising, and offers excellent views of the unique Engineer Mountain all the way down to the bottom of the chairlift. Fun fact: Engineer Mountain is just 32 feet shy of being a 13er, or 13,000-foot peak.
Powderhouse or Dante’s
Perfect for a quick ride break, Powderhouse and Dante’s both offer on-mountain dining, with a comfortable outdoor deck. Depending on where you are, Powderhouse is excellent for those enjoying frontside trails, while Dante’s offers backside refreshment. Grab a drink and a bite to eat, and soak in the sunshine on a bluebird day.
Village Plaza and Base Area
Not all of the best views require a chairlift ride. Walk around the Village Plaza and Base Area, and you will find that Purgatory Resort is a true winter wonderland. Draped in alpenglow after the lifts stop turning, the base area is perfect for sunset shots and crisp, moonlit walks.
Purgatory Lodge Pool
Soak in the views from the Purgatory Lodge heated outdoor pool. Guests who stay at the resort receive access to the pool and hot tubs, perfect for relaxing after an excellent day of skiing and riding. Book your slopeside stay today!
Inferno Mountain Coaster

The Coaster also operates in the summertime, along with a variety of other activities.
