Important Safety Information

On June 1st, a wildfire, called the “416 Fire,” was first reported in the Mitchell Lakes area of Hermosa, south of Purgatory Resort along the west side of Highway 550.  Firefighting efforts began as soon as it was reported and it continues to be an active wildfire.

The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Blue Team located its incident command center at Purgatory on Saturday, Jun. 2.  Purgatory was proud to host hundreds of hardworking firefighting crews as they battle the 416 Fire. We thank them for their exceptional work over the last week.  Purgatory thanks all the men and women working to keep our community safe, and very much appreciate their continued efforts fighting the fire.

Purgatory’s number one priority is the safety of our guests and employees.

Please note: resort officials are actively monitoring the wildfire to the south of the resort and are in direct communication with fire officials. As a result, Purgatory’s operations have been suspended at this time.  Purgatory will continue working with officials to determine a re-open date.

Highway 550

Highway 550 is temporarily closed.  Crews may re-open the highway to allow traffic to pass through – this is a limited opening with one lane of traffic and law enforcement escorting vehicles through the closed area from mile markers 32 to 43.5. There is active firefighting activity and equipment in the area. Please note: when fire activity increases, U.S. Highway 550 may close at any time. Please stay informed and be sure to check the status of U.S. Highway 550 on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s website cotrip.orgTwitter  or Facebook page.

Closures for San Juan National Forest & Hermosa Creek Watershed Area

Per the US Forest Service, the forest service land within Purgatory’s permitted area is currently closed to ALL activities due to the 416 Fire. The Hermosa Creek Watershed area and adjacent lands are also currently closed due to the 416 Fire through July 9th or until rescinded. This includes Hermosa Park Road, Hermosa Creek Trail, Elbert Creek Trail, Elbert Creek Road, Big Lick Trail. See map here for more information. The affected areas include Lower Hermosa Campground, Hermosa Creek, Jones Creek, and Dutch Creek Trails. Please do not use service roads or trails near Purgatory to access Hermosa Creek.

Drones

IMPORTANT! Do not fly drones anywhere near wildfires. It is illegal and can be deadly if flown near wildfires. Drones interfere with wildland fire air traffic, such as air tankers, helicopters, and other firefighting aircraft that are necessary to suppress wildland fires.
