Snow – Coming Soon!
SNOW – Coming Soon!
Purgatory is opening earlier this year than in recent history. Our planned opening day is Saturday, Nov. 21 to kick off Purgatory’s 50th ski season. Our winter supervising staff is returning to the resort, putting together operating plans and preparing for employee training.
As for our mountain operations, the snowmaking equipment is already in place on Demon and the crew is ready to start making snow as soon as the temperatures drop, which could be later this week. If Mother Nature cooperates, we will make snow earlier this season than in approximately 20 years. However, the current system is producing subtropical moisture, and we need a polar air mass to bring colder temperatures and less subtropical moisture for prime snowmaking conditions. With a strong El Niño in the forecast, the southern Colorado Rockies, including Purgatory, could experience above average snowfall this winter, which is great news for all of us.
Legends Lift 8 Update!
We continue to make progress on the new Legends (Lift 8) high-speed detachable quad. Currently, the crews are forming vertical columns and tying rebar in order to pour concrete for the bottom terminal. The top terminal is scheduled to arrive in another week. Trail work is mostly complete on the three new trails in the Legends lift area, and a total of 15 truckloads of harvested trees have been removed. Just a little bit of hand work and stump work is still left.
Thanks for checking in. Stay tuned for more updates coming soon.
