Kicking off Ski Season – Durango-Style!

We’re all excited to kick off the ski season.  But with the unseasonably warm weather we’ve experienced earlier this fall, we wanted to make our opening weekend fun and a little unique!  So, we decided to offer the quintessential Durango, Colorado mountain experience!  Ski and mountain bike all in the same day – on the same mountain – at the same resort!

Snowmaking & Mountain Update!

Our dedicated mountain crews have been working around the clock getting ready to kick off the ski season at Purgatory!  On Thursday, snowmaking operations at Purgatory started at 3am. Temperatures started to snowmaking-purgatory-11-18-16-300xdrop quickly as snow began to fall on the mountain just after sunrise yesterday morning. Temperatures hit a low of 15 degrees just after mid-day Thursday. Our snowmaking system ran full-tilt throughout the day, with more than 60 guns on-line. Snow making operations, at full capacity continued last night, and we expect these favorable conditions to carry through mid-day Friday. Snow making operations through Friday night will provide the last of the snow we need to open for skiing and riding on the Engineer Lift 2 Saturday afternoon.

What to Expect for Saturday’s Opening!

Ski & Ride!   The mountain bike uplift on Lift 4 will be open from 9am to 4pm all weekend to ride the  Divinity Downhill Flow Trail!

At 1pm, Purgatory will open for the ski season!  Skiers and snowboarders will upload/download on Lift 1 (the high-speed 6-person lift) and ski terrain under Engineer Lift 2.  Open trails include Upper Limbo, Westfork, and El Diablo.  Lifts 1 & 2 are turning 1pm to 5pm on Saturday and then 9am to 4pm, daily starting on Sunday.

Discounted lift tickets are available at the Ticket Window, allowing access to both activities – the mountain bike uplift and skiing.  Prices are $45 adults, $35 teens, $28 kids, $38 seniors, and $16 super seniors.  Purgatory Weekday Passes will be honored opening weekend, Nov. 19-20.  Of course, Power Passes are also honored all season.

The Assortment plays live at the Powderhouse 1:30 – 4:30pm.  The bar and outdoor grill at the Powderhouse is open 1 – 4:30pm.  The Bear Bar & Grille in the base area is open for bar & food service, 1-5pm.  Enjoy a game of cornhole and other lawn games on the Beach in the base area.

Purgatory Rentals is open noon-5pm Saturday & 8am-5pm Sunday with ski & snowboard rentals, and Expert Edge is open 8am-5pm for tuning & repair services, plus retail.
