IHBC Quarter Horse
Now in its 49th year, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic marks the official start to summer in Durango. And Purgatory Resort is the host for the finish line of the Quarter Horse race.
Come watch as hundreds of riders make their way up the final hill of this challenging 25-mile ride from Durango. We’ll have a party to celebrate! They have climbed 2300 feet on their journey and we will let them know just how amazing they are!
Feel free to throw on your craziest costume and get in the spirit for this fun event.
The ride starts at 8:15am in Durango, so the first riders should be coming across the finish line around 10am.
Be aware of the road closures on Highway 550 and plan your drive accordingly.
Starting at 7:15 a.m.: From the resort, southbound US 550 traffic will be diverted onto CR 203 at Hermosa Creek to Animas View Drive, just north of town. Northbound traffic from town all the way to Purgatory Ski Resort will proceed along US 550 with traffic control in place.
Starting at 7:30 a.m.: In the town of Durango — rolling closures in the northbound lanes of US 550/Camino Del Rio through Durango (from downtown north to Animas View Drive) will be in place to accommodate the three biking events’ starting times.
Between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.: US 550 will be fully closed in both directions between Purgatory Ski Resort and Silverton (the highway will remain open north of Silverton, as always).
ALTERNATE ROUTES: Traffic may choose to use east Animas Road (CR 250) if going north; and Santa Rita Drive if wanting to avoid rolling closures downtown in the morning.
