Meet the Double Amputee Who Crushes the Purg Bike Park

Bike instructor Dave Asselin with bike and mountains in background
At Purgatory, our greatest strength is our employees and today we are proud to recognize one of our newest team members, David Asselin. David left behind a successful career in the medical field and now lives the mountain lifestyle in his Sprinter van. He was drawn to the San Juans from the Front Range, and works at Purgatory as a mountain bike instructor.

A ski bum and raft guide for over 30 years, David is also a double amputee. He lost his heels and toes 9 years ago to frostbite, due to a “series of small mistakes” in the backcountry. He ...

So where do novice and intermediate bikers go to get comfortable with the features found in the Purgatory Bike Park? Our new skills park!

Ladies’ Shop Rides: Camaraderie & Community

For years I’ve been interested in mountain biking. As a hiker, rafter and backcountry skier it seemed like adding mountain biking to my arsenal of sports was not only mandatory to be considered a real Durangoan but it also looked like a whole lot of fun. But all of these same years I’ve been finding excuses not to go: I don’t have a bike. I have no clue where to ride. I have no one to go with.

Then I learned about Purgatory’s Shop Rides, and more specifically Ladies’ Rides. Going with a group of gals seemed somehow less intimidating to ...

Why Our Operations Team Rocks!

Our Mountain Operations team has a big job full of myriad tiny details. Besides the obvious (running the lifts, grooming the runs) there are many unsung heroes out there, such as the mechanics that keep all of the equipment running, including the vehicles and cats used to get around.

Not one, not two, but THREE of our team members have won prestigious awards in the past two seasons! Meet these men below:

Logan James was named this year’s Groomer of the Year at Colorado Ski Country USA’s annual meeting and Double Diamond Awards in Denver last week. Logan quite literally grew up ...

Meet the Man Who Is Skiing Over 150 Days This Season

Every season some of us decide on a goal of the number of days we want to ski or snowboard during the winter. For those who don’t live near a ski area this might be 5 days during Spring Break. Maybe you’re a local with a flexible work or class schedule and are aiming for a nice even 50 days. Or perhaps you are dead set on the famous 100-day mark. But over 150 days? Who skis that much? We caught up with local skier Brian Martinez to find out.

Tell us a bit about your background?

Introducing Community Benefit Days

This Sunday, Purgatory will host our first Community Benefit Day, previously known as Locals Benefit Days. The name and program have changed a bit, although the heartbeat of this initiative–to positively impact local non-profits–remains the same.

A New Name
Purgatory decided to change Locals Benefit Days to Community Benefit Days to better reflect the program goal: to positively impact our community. Guests often misinterpreted Locals Days as something exclusive for area residents.

A Revitalized Program
Every year, Purgatory donates tens of thousands of dollars to area non-profits. These organizations were historically selected based on an application process that was evaluated by a ...
