Provide safe, professional, competent, and fun ski/snowboard instruction to Purgatory Resort guests in a mountain winter and spring environment.

New applicants for this ski/snowboard instructor position must apply for this position online and provide:

  • Two references from current/former employer, professors, coaches, etc. and should include how your experience, work ethic and character traits make you a good fit as an instructor and employee at Purgatory Resort.
  • Please provide a copy of your current PSIA/AASI certification card and a letter of reference from the Director/Supervisor at your current resort.

Once we receive the completed application (including resume, references and letter of recommendation), we will contact you to arrange an interview.

Applicants must be able to pass a background check and have their own equipment (ski, snowboard, helmet, etc.) and professional looking solid black snow pants.  We provide a uniform jacket.  Contact Human Resources at 970-385-2162 with any questions.


Provide ski/snowboard instruction to guests up to 8 hours a day.  You will be required to teach both children and adults.

Make appropriate decisions regarding student progressions, terrain and teaching different abilities/attitudes.

Encourage further Ski and Snowboard School participation by teaching high quality lessons and providing an enjoyable guest experience.  Provide quality skiing and snowboarding instruction, give accurate feedback to students, and inform guests of their options regarding further instruction.

Understand and adhere to all Purgatory Resort/Ski and Snowboard School  policies and procedures.

Maintain PSIA/AASI membership.  Attend and participate in continuing education clinics.

Promote and emphasize safety in all classes.

Wear assigned uniform jacket with solid black snow pants. Uniform must be clean with accessories appropriate for ski and snowboard professionals.  Overall appearance must be neat, clean and professional.


Assist in maintaining locker and ski room.

Communicate any existing or potential safety hazards to supervisor immediately.

Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Must be able to ski/snowboard at an advanced intermediate level or above with consistency of speed and turn shape. Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Alertness, precision, ingenuity, problem solving, analytic ability, spatial perception, persuasiveness, memory, creativity, concentration, judgement, aesthetic sense, reasoning, imagination, initiative, patience, auditory and visual discrimination, excellent speaking and hearing ability are necessary abilities.

Education or Formal Training:

Certification by Professional Ski Instructors of America or American Association of Snowboard Instructors required.  Instructors must keep current with membership and continuing education requirements of certifying organization.


Ski/snowboard teaching experience required.


Skis and/or snowboards and ski lifts.


95% of the work day is spent outdoors in constantly changing weather conditions: these include extreme cold, snow, and wind during the winter season, extreme heat and wet in the spring season.  60% of the workday is spent skiing, 15% is spent sitting, 15% is spent standing, and 10% is spent walking.  Majority of walking and standing is done while wearing ski boots.  Majority of sitting is on exposed chair lifts in a winter Alpine environment.

Frequently lifting guests who have fallen, weighing up to 200 pounds and occasionally more.  Constantly climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and crouching to help guests with their equipment and while maneuvering on their skis.  This is a skiing /snowboarding position.
